Title:EMERGENCIES IN PALLIATIVE CARE
Abstract:Background: Palliative care is a new field that has recently received increasing attention. Emergency situations in palliative care are a specific and sensitive area that requires more precise guidelines on how to act. In the way they are conceived, in their goals and their measures, palliative care and emergency medicine do not have many common points, but they definitely do have many common patients, so knowledge integration and cooperation are crucial. The purpose of the research was to investigate emergency situations in palliative care. Method: The study was based on a qualitative research approach and a descriptive work method. Primary and secondary sources were collected, analyzed, and synthesized for the needs of the empirical work. The interview technique was used to obtain primary data for the analysis. A review of professional and scientific literature obtained from some databases was also a source of data. Results: 6 medical workers employed in emergency medical care participated in the research. We found that the interviewees were eager for additional knowledge that would help them address emergency situations encountered in fieldwork. There are many palliative patients in the field, and due to poorly organized palliative care and palliative teams, a large share of the burden must be taken on by relatives, employed medical workers, and emergency medical care. Discussion: A palliative illness is any incurable illness that can befall any individual. It is a misconception that palliative care is meant only for elderly people. The palliative approach to patient treatment supports the holistic treatment of a person with their physical, psychological, spiritual, and social needs. Relatives, who need help when they are taking care of the patient as well as after the patient’s death, are also included in quality palliative treatment.
