Abstract:Teoretična izhodišča: Porast sladkornih bolnikov postaja vse večji problem. Primarne podatke smo pridobili s tehniko anketiranja.

Title:Patient self-care - an important element of diabetes management
Abstract:Theoretical background: The increase in patients with diabetes is becoming a growing problem. It is a complex disease bringing along possible complications and consequences for the patient, his relatives and society. After diagnosis, it is crucial that the patient receives appropriate care, aimed not only at reducing the chance of developing chronic complications, but also at effective education and support to maintain the best possible state of health. Education should not only convey information about the disease, but also encourage lifestyle changes, motivate and empower the patient to become active in the management and decision-making of their disease, and to see the goals of treatment. The research purpose was to examine the knowledge of diabetes patients about their disease and successful self-management of it. Methods: The research was based on the quantitative method of work. We obtained primary data using the survey technique. 300 type 1 and 2 diabetic patients participated. Results: We found that patients with diabetes have good knowledge about their disease and perceive their self-care of the disease as good. The results showed that self-care for diabetes worsens with aging, and that there are no statistically significant differences in self-care based on the duration of diabetes. Those surveyed with type 1 diabetes had, on average, a lower glycated hemoglobin than patients with other types. Discussion: With good self-care, a diabetes patient can live a quality life and prevent possible complications. Quality education is key equipping the patient with knowledge and strategies to solve the challenges brought by the disease.
