Title:Empowering employees in the prevention of hospital acquired infections
Abstract:Starting points: Hospital-acquired infections (HAIs) are among the most common infections during patient care and represent the most common treatment complications. Control and containment of these infections must be meaningful and targeted at the underlying causes. Epidemiological surveillance of infectious infections is essential to contain infections, as it helps to identify infections in the patient early and to take appropriate action immediately. The implementation of general preventive measures can reduce and limit such infections. The most important and effective measure to prevent infections is hand hygiene. The role of healthcare workers, especially nurses, in infection prevention and control is paramount, as they have the most contact with patients in their daily work. The survey aims to determine the extent of employees' knowledge in the field of infectious diseases. Methods: The data were collected using a survey technique based on a questionnaire developed based on national and international literature. The basic population of the sample consists of 106 persons, all employees of the Children's Hospital in Šentvid pri Stični. Seventy-one questionnaires were correctly completed and returned. The sample coverage is 66.98 %. Results: The results show that all employees know the meaning of hospital-acquired infections, and 72 % of respondents know the exact definition of hospital-acquired infections. 95 % of employees believe that following the instructions they have prepared help to limit and prevent the spread of infectious diseases. 80 % of respondents believe hand hygiene is the most important measure to contain infectious infections. 73 % of staff feel that they do not know enough about health-related infections or more than half of them would like to have more knowledge in this area. Discussion: The emergence of new infections in healthcare is a key reason healthcare staff are constantly faced with new challenges. We found that the staff in the institution analyzed are quite aware of and have a positive attitude towards implementing actions to avoid and adequately contain the spread of infections. There were minor differences between healthcare staff in their knowledge of measures to contain the spread of infections. The establishment's management should be aware of the importance of building the quality of the work of the staff by providing additional training to all staff and carrying out regular surveillance in the areas of prevention as well as containment of the spread of infectious infections.
