Abstract:Teoretična izhodišča: Poškodbe glave so svetovni javnozdravstveni problem in predstavljajo enega glavnih vzrokov trajne invalidnosti in umrljivosti.

Title:NURSING CARE OF A PATIENT WITH A HEAD INJURY
Abstract:Theoretical background: Head injuries are a global public health issue and represent a significant cause of permanent disability and mortality. While preventive measures such as legislation on seat belt usage, drunk driving, and workplace safety have contributed to the reduction of incidence rates, healthcare providers remain crucial in managing patients with head injuries from initial treatment through rehabilitation. The study aims to examine the nursing care of patients following a head injury. Method: Our study included six healthcare providers with at least one year of experience working with patients who have suffered head injuries. We used a qualitative research approach and a descriptive method. We prepared questions for a semi-structured interview based on a preliminary review of scientific and professional literature and databases such as Cobiss, PubMed, and Google Scholar. We adhered to ethical research principles in all data collection and processing phases. We analyzed the collected data, organized the interviewees' responses into tables, categorized the data into individual codes, and interpreted them. Results: The interviewed healthcare providers encounter various head injuries in their workplace. They show knowledge of potential complications following an injury, competence in assessing consciousness, and ability to identify signs of increased intracranial pressure. Additionally, they are familiar with the consequences of a head injury on a patient. Discussion: While the interviewees displayed appropriate knowledge for caring for head injury patients and accurately assessing their consciousness, some gaps in their knowledge were identified. We recommend ongoing education and training to refresh and expand their expertise, thereby enhancing patient healthcare quality.
