Title:Social Attitude Towards Women who Choose a Childfree Life
Abstract:Although we live in a relatively advanced time, motherhood remains one of the central roles still expected of women. The social constructs that have shaped these roles throughout history continue to influence society's attitudes towards women who choose not to have children. This, in turn, leads to a negative societal perception of these women, which often manifests through stigmatization. Social prejudices, both directly and indirectly, affect the psychological well-being of women in modern society. In this context, the concept of individualization and independent decisions about a woman's body and life is often overlooked. A review of the impact of social constructs on the formation of the institution of motherhood is key to understanding contemporary societal attitudes towards women who choose childfree lives. Modern social standards regarding motherhood, shaped by archaic patterns, influence the relationship and formation of society's stance towards these women, which manifests through stereotypes. The lack of research in this area in Slovenia marks the future of Slovenian society in relation to this phenomenon. The research was conducted on a sample of 300 adult individuals in Slovenia. Using quantitative methodology, we tested hypotheses to determine contemporary societal attitudes towards women who choose not to have children, and which social constructs still influence these attitudes today. The research results suggest social progress and support for individual decisions, but the social construct of a patriarchal system still partially influences the formation of society's stance towards motherhood and, consequently, towards women who choose not to have children. The results also indicate the existence of a pattern among women who opt for a life without children.
