Abstract:Downov sindrom je najpogostejša kromosomska nepravilnost in prav tako najpogostejši vzrok duševne prizadetosti.

Abstract:Down's syndrome is the most common chromosomal abnormality and the most common cause of intellectual disability. Given that, it is an important area for research, as people with Down syndrome are encountered in physiotherapy in centres for people with intellectual disabilities, primary schools for people with disabilities, as well as in outpatient physiotherapy in public health services or in the private sector. The aim of this research is to investigate, through a literature review, whether hippotherapy is an effective method for improving motor skills in children with Down syndrome in the short term. The literature used in the study was collected between January 2022 and September 2023 from the internet databases PubMed, ProQuest, Google Scholar and Google web browser. Other literature was obtained from the library, using the Cobiss online library. A PRIZMA diagram was used to determine the relevance of the literature reviewed. For the theoretical part of the thesis we used the descriptive method, and in some part also the methods of comparison and analysis. In the empirical part of the thesis we used the method of data comparison, where we compared data from 9 studies. We found an improvement in motor skills in children with Down syndrome across all parameters tested. Hippotherapy thus proved to be an effective method in physiotherapy, with an effect on improving muscle strength, static and dynamic balance, endurance, trunk and head control and flexibility. At the same time, it has an effect on reducing muscle tone in spastic muscles. It also has an effect on improving all parameters of the GMFM-88 scale, which is the most commonly used measurement tool in selected studies.
