Abstract:Teoretična izhodišča: Zgodnje poučevanje bolnikov s končno ledvično odpovedjo ima ključno vlogo pri njihovem razumevanju bolezni in sprejemanju možnosti nadomestnega zdravljenja. V primeru zdravljenja s hemodializo so bili skoraj vsi bolniki seznanjeni z operativnim posegom arterio-venske fistule (93 %) in o hemodializi dva- do štirikrat tedensko v dializnem centru (93 %).

Title:HEALTH EDUCATION OF THE PATIENT IN THE PRE-DIALYSIS PERIOD
Abstract:Theoretical Foundations: Early education of patients with end-stage renal disease plays a crucial role in their understanding of the disease and acceptance of available replacement therapy options. The kidneys perform essential functions in maintaining the body's balance, and their failure leads to a gradual decline in health and the need for treatment. It is important for patients to receive timely and appropriate information about the progression of the disease and the available methods of replacement therapy, such as haemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, and transplantation. The effectiveness of pre-dialysis education depends on clearly defined health education goals and the assessment of acquired knowledge, which enables better patient preparation for treatment. The urpose of the research is to determine the effectiveness of health education in patients with chronic kidney disease in the pre-dialysis period. Methods: The research is based on a quantitative approach and a descriptive method. For the empirical part of the thesis, primary and secondary sources were selected, analysed, and synthesized. Primary data for the analysis was obtained using a survey technique. Data sources also included a review of domestic and foreign literature and internet databases (bibliographic databases, PubMed, Medline, CHINAL, COBISS. Results: A total of 104 patients participated in the study, all of whom were receiving treatment at the Dialysis Center Nefrodial Krško and Nefrodial Celje and had started replacement therapy for end-stage renal disease by 2024. We found that more than half of the respondents (59%) had participated in pre-dialysis education. We also found that the majority of respondents (64%) believed they had obtained sufficient information about their disease and the methods of kidney disease treatment. All patients (n = 13; 100%) undergoing peritoneal dialysis received information about the surgical procedure for inserting a peritoneal catheter, daily replacement of dialysis solution, the option of overnight dialysis, and the appropriate space for storing dialysis materials at home. In the case of haemodialysis, nearly all patients were informed about the surgical procedure for an arteriovenous fistula (93%) and about undergoing haemodialysis two to four times a week at the dialysis centre (93%). Furthermore, we found that more than half of the respondents (54%) agreed with the statement that pre-dialysis education influenced their choice of replacement therapy method. Discussion: The research results have shown that the majority of patients participate in pre-dialysis education, where they acquire essential information about the disease and its progression. With appropriate education, they are better prepared to make informed decisions regarding the choice of renal replacement therapy, which contributes to better adaptation to treatment and improved health outcomes.
