Title:Father’s Distress After Childbirth
Abstract:The birth of a child is one of the most significant life milestones, bringing immense joy but also numerous challenges for both parents. While much focus is placed on the hardships and adjustments faced by mothers, fathers' experiences are often overlooked, despite being crucial for establishing a healthy family dynamic. A father provides security, serves as a role model, and acts as a protector for the child, while also supporting his partner through difficult challenges. Although both others and the father himself often perceive him as the pillar of the family, he can find himself at the center of specific stressors. A lack of adequate knowledge and preparation for the arrival of the child, financial pressures, changes in the partner relationship, sleep deprivation, loss of social networks, and other factors can contribute to paternal distress. The empirical section of the thesis is based on the analysis of seven semi-structured interviews, exploring the challenges and distress fathers face following the birth of their first child. Research findings indicate that fathers frequently experience distress due to conflicts between professional and family responsibilities, mental health challenges, difficulties related to childcare, and changes in their partner relationship. Furthermore, the thesis underscores the importance of the father’s role in the child’s life, highlighting the need for appropriate support systems to address paternal distress should it arise.
