Title:Play Therapy in the Treatment of Children with the Traumatic Experience
Abstract:This thesis explores the impact of play therapy on children with traumatic experiences, with the aim of deepening the understanding of how trauma manifests in children's behavior, emotional expression, and play, as well as how the therapeutic process, through play therapy, supports comprehensive recovery. Childhood trauma can significantly affect a child’s emotional, behavioral, and physical development, making therapeutic intervention adapted to the child's internal experience, essential for the processing and integration of traumatic events. The research is based on a qualitative methodology and includes semi-structured interviews with nine professionally trained therapists who incorporate play therapy in their work. Through thematic analysis, key categories were identified, highlighting behaviour and emotional indicators of trauma, therapeutic approaches used, the role of play in the healing process, and the characteristics of post-traumatic play. Findings reveal that the most common responses to trauma include regression, withdrawal, aggression, emotional dysregulation, and repetitive and rigid play patterns. The therapists most frequently use non-directive, child-centered play therapy, which provides a safe space for the child to express and process overwhelming experiences. Play is confirmed as an effective therapeutic medium, as it facilitates access to unconscious material, emotional regulation, somatic integration, and a gradual transition into developmentally appropriate play. This thesis provides valuable insight into therapeutic processes when working with children affected by trauma and contributes to the professional understanding of play as a core modality for healing.
