Abstract:Introduction: Rhizarthrosis or osteoarthritis (OA) of the carpometacarpal (CMC) joint is a common degenerative condition, particularly affecting women and elderly individuals. It is one of the most frequently affected joints in hand osteoarthritis, with a wide range of symptoms, including pain, swelling, decreased strength and mobility of the joint, and difficulties in performing daily activities, all of which significantly impact the patient’s quality of life. In the early stages, a broad spectrum of conservative treatment methods is used for rhizarthrosis. However, there are still no specific guidelines for conservative treatment of rhizarthrosis. Methodology: Through a systematic literature review we investigated which physiotherapeutic methods and techniques are most commonly used in the treatment of rhizarthrosis, the effectiveness in pain reduction, and the short-term effects of physiotherapy in conservative treatment. We included 11 studies published between 2015 and 2025, sourced from PubMed, ScienceDirect, and Google Scholar databases. The analysis was conducted using a qualitative approach. Results: The results showed that a wide range of physiotherapeutic methods are used, most often in combination (exercises, splints, manual therapy, joint protection). The majority of studies confirm the positive impact of these methods on pain reduction and functional improvement, but the question remains as to which method is the most effective. Discussion: We found that combined approaches are generally more effective in conservative treatment. We provided new starting points for further research, which could lead to more systematic and clearer guidelines for the treatment of rhizarthrosis in the future.
