Title:MANAGEMENT OF A PATIENT WITH ILLICIT DRUG ABUSE IN THE EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT
Abstract:In emergency medical care settings, registered nurses are frequently confronted with patients under the influence of illicit drugs. Cases of overdose represent acute, potentially life-threatening conditions that necessitate rapid, professional, and well-coordinated intervention. Within this context, the role of the registered nurse encompasses timely and precise assessment of the patient’s condition, the implementation of urgent procedures aimed at stabilizing vital functions, as well as continuous monitoring of the clinical course. Equally important are effective communication with the patient and the establishment of a safe environment for both the patient and the healthcare personnel. The aim of this research is to explore the role of registered nurses in the management of patients who abuse illicit drugs in emergency medical care settings. The research objectives are directed towards identifying the most frequently used illicit drugs and the characteristic clinical manifestations of intoxication, examining the specific responsibilities of registered nurses in such clinical scenarios, analyzing the communication challenges encountered in practice, evaluating safety-related aspects of care, and assessing the level of awareness regarding emerging psychoactive substances.
