Abstract:Teoretična izhodišča: Ključna naloga reševalcev nujne medicinske pomoči je ohranitev življenja.

Abstract:Theoretical background: The key task of emergency medical responders is to preserve life. Resuscitating palliative patients can raise ethical dilemmas among emergency medical responders. The aim of our study was to determine the presence and frequency of perceived ethical dilemmas in palliative care resuscitation and to examine the role of paramedics in palliative care resuscitation. Methodology: In addition to basic descriptive statistics, a quantitative research method was applied using a self-administered questionnaire. The sample included 93 emergency medical responders in Pomurje. For the interpretation of the results, tabular numerical and percentage display was used with the help of Microsoft Excel. Results: In their work, paramedics in Pomurje encounter palliative care patients only a few times (N = 64, f = 69%). When working with them, they are mostly (N = 78, f = 84%) confronted with ethical dilemmas, which are mostly perceived as conflicts between the patient's wishes and the family's wishes (N = 78, f = 84%). They mostly perceive their work with palliative patients as a primary aid to provide emergency medical care (N = 64, f = 69%) and they mostly perceive their role in the management of palliative patients as important (N = 21, f = 23%). They are prepared to deal with the problems related to palliative care (N = 48, f = 52%). We find that only 16% of the respondents are satisfied with the current guidelines for the management of palliative patients. Discussion: Emergency responders often face ethical dilemmas when managing patients in palliative care, which is why they want to know more about it and have more specific guidelines.
