Razprava: Na podlagi raziskave smo ugotovili, da kakovostna obravnava pacienta z osebnostno motnjo zahteva poglobljeno strokovno znanje, kontinuirano izobraževanje, supervizijo in ustrezno organizacijsko podporo.

Title:Nursing Care of a Patient with a Personality Disorder
Abstract:Introduction: This bachelor’s thesis addresses nursing care for patients with personality disorders, based on the need for a deeper understanding of personality characteristics, etiological factors, and the professional role of nursing, carried out by registered nurses. Personality disorders represent a complex field of healthcare practice that requires specific professional knowledge and effective communication. The aim of the study was to examine how nurses understand the concept of personality and personality disorders, which risk factors they identify in their development, how they perceive their professional role, and which interventions they consider to be the most effective. In addition, the study sought to explore the challenges nurses encounter when working with patients with personality disorders and the ways in which they cope with these challenges in the clinical setting. The findings of this study contribute significantly to a better understanding of the complexity of nursing care in the field of personality disorders and provide valuable insights for the improvement of professional nursing practice. Methods: The study was based on a qualitative research approach. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews conducted in October 2025. The theoretical part of the thesis was developed through a review of national and international literature and sources from the databases PubMed, COBISS, Google Scholar, and the library of the University of Novo Mesto. Eight nurses participated in the interviews. Results: The study showed that nurses understand personality as a set of psychological and behavioral characteristics of an individual, while personality disorders are perceived as deviations that impair emotional regulation and interpersonal functioning. The most commonly identified risk factors for the development of personality disorders include family environment, early trauma, genetic influences, and social conditions. Effective care for patients with personality disorders requires a therapeutic relationship, assertive communication, clear boundary setting, and high-quality teamwork. Among the main challenges in caring for patients with personality disorders, nurses highlighted manipulative behavior, communication difficulties, emotional exhaustion, and difficulties in maintaining professional boundaries. Discussion: Based on the findings, it was concluded that high-quality care for patients with personality disorders requires advanced professional knowledge, continuous education, supervision, and adequate organizational support. One of the central focuses of the study was the role of the nurse in caring for patients with personality disorders. Nurses emphasized that their role extends beyond performing basic nursing tasks and includes establishing a therapeutic relationship, using assertive and empathetic communication, setting clear and consistent boundaries, and collaborating within an interdisciplinary team. Nurses identified the therapeutic relationship as the foundation of effective care, as it provides patients with a sense of safety, trust, and stability.
