Abstract:Uvod: Osteoartritis kolena je pogosta kronična degenerativna bolezen kolenskega sklepa, ki prizadene predvsem starejšo populacijo.

Abstract:Introduction: Knee osteoarthirits is a common chronic degenreative disease of the knee joint, primarily affecting the older population. It results grom the wear and gradual loss of articular cartilage. Typical symptoms include joint pain that worsens with activity and improves with rest, often accompanied by morning stiffness lasting less than 30 minutes. Swelling of the knee and pain after prolonged sitting are also common. Major risk factor include overweight, previous knee injuires, prolonged joint overuse and female sex. Treatment is symptomatic and focuses on pain relief, improving funcitonality and limiting disability. Objective: The aim of this thesis is to determine how the use of transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) and therapeutic ultrasound affects pain redcution in patients with knee osteoarthritis. Methods: Through a review of professional and scientific literature form the PEDro, PubMed and ScienceDirect databases we aimed to evaluate the effect of TENS and therapeutic ultrasound on pain redcution in patients with knee osteoarthritis. Results: After applying inclusion and excluion criteria, 10 studies were included in the final analysis. Both methods were effective in reducing pain, although the results were limited to the short term. Discussion: Both TENS and therapeutic ultrasound significantly reduces pain in patients with knee osteoarthritis. The methods are most effective as compplementary therapies within a comprehensive physiotherpay approach.
