Abstract:This thesis examines the use of the Redis database as a solution for real-time analytics, using a leaderboard application as a case study. It investigates the system’s efficiency in operations that require fast data insertion, updating, ranking, and display, and compares its performance with the MySQL relational database. The theoretical part presents leaderboard management systems, the characteristics of real-time analytics, the sorted set data structure in Redis, and the differences between relational and non-relational databases. In the empirical part, a system prototype is designed in the Amazon Web Services cloud environment. The comparison is conducted between Valkey, used as a Redis-compatible solution, and the MySQL relational database. The evaluation is based on simulated runner data, with operations tested under identical scenarios and comparable infrastructure conditions. The analysis includes operations characteristic of leaderboard systems. The results show that the Redis-based data system is more efficient in operations where low latency and continuous updating of user rankings are essential. With appropriate indexing, MySQL approaches Redis performance in certain queries; however, Redis, or Valkey as its compatible implementation, maintains a clear advantage in ranking and real-time updates. The findings support the use of a hybrid approach, in which Redis provides a fast operational layer, while MySQL ensures persistent and structured data storage.
