Abstract:Introduction: Stress represents the body’s response to an individual, and it can be both positive and negative. Prolonged negative stress leads to burnout, which is most often observed among healthcare professionals in emergency medical services, as they are confronted with challenging situations on a daily basis. Methods: The primary aim of this thesis was to examine information regarding stress and burnout among employees in emergency medical services. During the research, we formulated four research questions and employed a qualitative research approach. To guide the research process and obtain the final results, we utilized the PRISMA flow diagram. Results: During our research, we found that numerous factors can lead to stress and burnout, such as fast-paced work, various pressures, daily exposure to trauma, and many others. All of these consequently reduce employees’ work performance. With appropriate techniques and approaches, such as mindfulness, yoga, or psychotherapy, the negative effects can be managed more effectively, which is why it is important to address them with suitable strategies. Discussion and conclusion: Stress and burnout represent a serious issue faced by employees working in emergency medical services, as they are constantly exposed to stressful events. It would be reasonable to conduct further research on this topic in Slovenia, as only in this way can we respond appropriately and manage both stress and burnout in a timely and effective manner.
