Abstract:The main idea of the Masterʼs thesis is to present and define our view, to the ongoing civil war in Syria, to determine the reasons for which it had occurred, to identify all actors, both internal and external, involved in the conflict and to link the latter with international law, which is the basis for international interventions on the territory of foreign sovereign countries, by the international community. The following work starts with the definition of the state and its basic concepts, continues to the field of war and civil war, describes international law and respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms, and passes to the revolutionary Arab Spring, trigger of which in the beginning of 2010, played a key role in the occurrence of events in Syria. The work also represents Syria and its history, demography, ethnic and religious heterogeneity and the ruling political regime since its independence onwards. Master's thesis provides a critical overview on the attitude and reactions of the international community, its impotence and indifference in a long search for solution as well as failed attempts of intervention by reason of ending the civil war in Syria, which has caused the biggest humanitarian crisis in modern history.
