Abstract:Extended coresidence of young people and their parents is a topic of current concern that has been vastly discussed or approachedfrom different perspectives over the recent years. According to the empirical data on extended coresidence of parents and children (or young adults) Slovenia ranks among top European countries as young people tend to establish their own independent household and leave parental home rather late. Traditional family and intergeneration cooperation are effected by various factors such as economic, social, demographic, cultural, political or other situation. As a consequence, the issue of extended coresidence of young adults and their parents, which gains increasing importance, is conditioned upon individual factors (e.g. career, employment and wage status of an individual, partnership and parenthood, gender and personal choices) and structural factors (e.g. welfare regime, labour-market conditions, housing availability and societal cultural patterns). In addition, successful transition to adulthood depends also on regulatory measures of the state (housing programs, subsidies etc.).This paper thus discusses andexplores the phenomenon of prolonged coresidence of young adults and their parents. It aims at highlighting the trends of family life in Slovenia. Furthermore, the factors for extended coresidence are given. Moreover, the legal basis related to housing issues of young people are analysed. The results of the survey analysis give an in-depth insight into relations, viewpoints and opinion of the middle-aged working generation (40-61 years) on housing issues of young people and possible solutions, in particular their view on housing issues of young people and the importance of various factors which effect extended coresidence (development of the housing market, non-eligibility for housing loans, poor housing policy or state subsidies, lack of non-profit flats etc.)
