Title:Šolanje psov kot element tretmana
Abstract:The master's thesis presents the evaluation of implementing in practice the project of educating, socializing and training dogs as an element of treatment offered to ZVI Logatec juvenile delinquents and inmates at ZPKZ Ig in cooperation with the Horjul Animal Shelter. The author's main objective was to identify positive effects, limitations and possibilities of a long-term introduction into the correctional facilities' programme. The theories and purpose of punishment are described first, alongside with the characteristics of imposing penalties on juveniles and serve as the basis for understanding penalization. This part is followed by the presentation of treatment ideology and sociotherapeutic orientation with the main characteristics of juvenile delinquent and inmate treatment. In Chapter Four, dog training as an element of treatment is presented, finding its foundation in programmes from abroad. It is followed by the basics of dog training as the basis of practical participation by juvenile delinquents and inmates. The staple part is taken up by Chapter Five of the thesis, showcasing the effects of the project on the participants. We observe that the project carries over notable positive psychosocial effects on juvenile delinquents and inmates that can significantly aid their rehabilitation and reintegration into society. The correctional facilities' employees reported experiencing certain positive effects, as well. Also noteworthy is the fact that the project contributed to the socialization of dogs at the Horjul Animal Shelter and pups from the author's own litter. Our optimism is fueled by the participants' desire to further participate in the project and their unanimous standpoint that such form of work should be made available to other correctional facilities in Slovenia.
