Skozi različna obdobja so otoku vladala različna ljudstva-od Asircev, Egipčanov, Perzijcev do Otomanov, kasneje so si otok prilastili še Britanci. Pod britansko oblastjo je ostal vse do leta 1960, ko je otok postal republika.

Abstract:Cyprus is located at the crossroads of three continents and is one of the smallest islands in the NE Mediterranean. Through different periods, the island was ruled by different peoples from Assyrians, Egyptians, Persians to Ottomans, later the island was appropriated by the British. It remained under British rule until 1960, when the island became a republic. Cyprus has not only a turbulent history, the present is no different. Cyprus represents one of the longest conflicts in the world. Finding solutions to the Cyprus issue is a challenge for both the parties to the conflict and the international community. Negotiations for the reunification of the northern and southern parts of Cyprus, which began in 1975, brought 5 serious attempts at reunification by 2004. Among the various ideas and plans, UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan's plan held the most hope. The dissertation sheds light on the historical periods of the island of Cyprus, from the original settlers in the early Neolithic period, the rule of various peoples to liberation from the British yoke of colonialism, the establishment of the Republic of Cyprus and the division of the island into northern and southern parts. In addition to outlining the origins of two countries: the Republic of Cyprus and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, attempts to merge two warring parties have been presented, in which ethical disagreements have led to a deep and lasting conflict known as the Cyprus conflict or the Cyprus issue.
