Abstract:The world%s environment is changing faster than ever. Forests are disappearing, sea levels are rising, glaciers are melting and air and water are becoming increasingly more polluted. But the environment is not changing on its own. Much of the blame for environmental issues lies with people, due to the number of current residents in the world. There are currently almost 7,8 billion of us, and that number is steadily rising, despite declining birth rates. This situation of overpopulation and people%s consumption habits no longer enable sustainability of the environment - our consumption and reproduction are therefore harming our healthy environment. The purpose of this diploma thesis was to establish a connection between overcrowding and environmental challenges, and in the second part to explore the possibilities of solving the problem. This has been done through the analysis of the world%s population data and the research of many international organizations. I have found that population is a factor that has a negative impact on the environment and that despite growing warnings from environmentalists about the negative impact of overpopulation, legislators avoid addressing the issue for fear of excessive action and violation of individuals% human rights. International organizations are pointing out the problems and trying to solve them, but they are limited to sovereign decisions of countries, human rights, etc. There are no direct quick fixes - it is the social responsibility of all people to make overpopulation a more serious talking subject and to draw attention to the environmental consequences that people cause through over-reproduction and overconsumption of goods.
