Abstract:In my Master's thesis of the second level study program, I cover fragments of self-help manuals which are in big part still an unexplored area among Slovenians. In the theoretical part of my Master's thesis I explore the social and historical backgrounds which have influenced the development of self-help. I am also interested in the fact what contributed to the present day success of such literature (especially in the United States) and who are the biggest critics of the genre. My aim is to do a research among self-help readers in Slovenia. In the empirical part of my research, I have examined whether Slovenians know about and read self-help manuals, who is a typical reader, why does an individual decide to read such books in the first place and what are the effects of reading this type of literature. The results have shown that Slovenians are familiar with this type of books and have been reading them (occasionally or regularly). The majority of male respondents have been introduced with self-help manuals through media while most female respondents seek out this genre on purpose. They pick the books based on their area of interest and they also choose books from a certain author on the recommendations of their family and friends. Readers use self-help books for personal growth, although they are more likely to read them when they experience certain problems in their lives. According to my research, Slovenians don't have specific reading techniques, most of them read an entire book from beginning to an end in a certain time and they also underline or write down important facts. Slovenians are also very selective readers and they do not accept and believe everything that is written in the books. They only use tips they find useful and practical. Almost all readers that have been a part of my research have already put into practice some advice from self-help books and as a result their lives have improved. Slovenians think that self-help books have brought positive changes into their lives. Next to self-help manuals, readers in Slovenia also use other forms of self-help, including yoga and meditation. Based on my research, some of them have also sought professional help.
