V empiričnem delu naloge so predstavljeni rezultati in ključne ugotovitve opravljene kvantitativne in kvalitativne raziskave.

Abstract:The research field, which the thesis tackles, is online social networks, where we were interested in their impact on self-esteem of young people and the possibility of developing narcissistic behaviour in the so-called Net generation. This theme was chosen because we believe that this field deserves further research, as today, in an increasingly virtual world, online social networks play an important role in shaping and maintaining an individual's self-esteem, especially among young people, who are completely ‘won over’ by them. The thesis consists of two parts. The first part is devoted to the theoretical frameworks, where we present key concepts which support the thesis theoretically. At the beginning, we introduce online social networks, where we put greater emphasis on the most popular online social network Facebook, we continue with the presentation of self-esteem, and in the end we tackle the concept of narcissism. All terms are defined by of a number of authors that work on the subject, while we try to be as objective as possible. For a better understanding, we included some studies performed on this topic, thus further enriching the thesis. In the empirical part of the thesis the results and key findings of our quantitative and qualitative research are presented. We established that despite the fact that online social networks do not help our selected sample to maintain a positive self-esteem, we can still talk about an impact that these have on individuals and their personalities. Whether they positively or negatively affect people’s self-esteem, it depends on each individual and their use of the online social networks. As for the development of narcissistic behaviour in online social networks, the results confirm that, especially the excessive use of social networking sites by individuals can lead to more narcissistic behaviour, which is consistent with the literature.
