Abstract:Achieving the efficient management of primary resources by re-using waste resources is an increasing trend in the global market for social actors due to following environmental policies and recognising benefits. Industrial symbiosis allows for the simultaneous achievement of benefits by re-using waste resources, which, as one of the approaches to circular economy, represents an important and sustainable mechanism in industrial and non-industrial processes. Industrial symbiosis networks within which industrial symbiosis takes place are, from a social point of view, unlike ecological and economic in scientific terms, and are significantly less researched, resulting in a lack of understanding of socio-cultural factors in the structuring of these networks. This dissertation focuses on studying the impact of six socio-cultural factors that influence the structuring of industrial symbiosis networks in different combinations. We focused on the impact of organisational culture, social responsibility, attitude towards the environment, cognitive frames, social capital and inter-organisational trust. With explicit interest in how social actors can assess the impact of particular socio-cultural factors, whether it had an impact, and if it had, how the impact reflected in the placement in the industrial symbiosis network, and how this reflects in current collaboration. We are therefore interested in whether a social actor can assess the impact as positive, negative, without impact, or are neutral. Using a descriptive statistical analysis, we showed that before the beginning and during the course of the collaboration, positive influence of inter-organisational trust, attitude towards the environment, social capital and social responsibility is largely present, positive impact of organisational culture and cognitive frames is somewhat less present, while negative impact and neutrality of the underlying socio-cultural factors are almost negligible. Using the qualitative comparative analysis in the domain of fuzzy set analysis, we showed the presence of the impact of socio-cultural factors as a combination of conditions, where, according to the defined threshold of membership, we assess the presence of the impact of each socio-cultural factor. We find that socio-cultural factors, unlike descriptive statistical analysis, impact the structuring of industrial symbiosis networks less, but each socio-cultural factor has a significant impact on structuring.
