Abstract:Nowadays, it is common to hear something about leftists and rightists, about the political left and right practically every day. In spite of passionately declaring themselves as leftists or rightists, very few people actually know what left and right wing parties really are. Based on which facts can an individual in Slovenia put himself into political space? Even though Slovenia has been left without its political centre with the loss of Janez Drnovšek, and admitting the fact that the abyss between leftists and rightists has grown deeper than ever, there are very few of those who are able to answer the question above. The terms »left« and »right« are used with incredible easiness by mass media and political actors and accepted without any reservations whatsoever by the majority of individuals. The aim of this diploma work is to determine whether politically affiliated citizens' perception of the left and right is in accordance with the theoretical explanation of these two political options. The conclusion drawn from the quantitative and qualitative research clearly shows that the theoretical explanation of the left and right wing is far from being familiar to the Slovenians. Therefore, it is not surprising that their decision for affiliation to a chosen political party is made on the grounds of completely different reasons. The importance of various reasons has not been completely cleared by the research itself, nevertheless, voters’ relationship towards the Roman Catholic Church and recent history has to be taken in consideration.
