Abstract:In the thesis we investigated the factors and ways of coping with stress in professional athletes, and the impact of moving abroad on the development of professional careers. We were interested in whether moving abroad causes additional stress to athletes, what these stressors are like and how it affects coping with stress, especially from the point of view of (absence) of social support. In our research we have investigatet 61 Slovenian active professional athletes who are developing their careers abroad. The results of our research show that athletes abroad face physiological and psychogenic stressors. Pressure of showing good performance and the absence of a social network are, according to athletes, the most stressful factors. However, there are differences in the level of stressors experienced according to the level of competition, years spent abroad and differences depending on who they live with. We can confirm that the type of stressors abroad differs from the stressors that burden athletes in the home environment, but the amount of stressors we can not. Responses to stress are positive, because they all accept situation and are looking for solution to solve it. About coping stategies we can say that they most often use social support, confrontation and last but not least, they are trying to find positive aspect of the situation. Their responses to the significant events of the past year are mostly focusing on problem solving and a little bit less they use method moving away from solution. With each year abroad, athletes are emotionally more stable, they know more coping strategies and also include them in the process of coping and dealing with stress.
