Abstract:Magistrska naloga zajema področje medijske pismenosti med starejšo generacijo. V teoretičnem delu, kot izhodiščnem, smo predstavili globalizacijo in medijsko pismenost, in sicer v povezavi s prebivalstvom Slovenije, zlasti s starostniki. Opravili smo dvajset intervjujev, kateri so bili izvedeni naključno.

Abstract:This master’s thesis discusses the topic of media literacy among elderly population in Slovenia. In its theoretical part, we take a closer look at the concepts of globalization and knowledge of media literacy, with the main focus on elderly Slovenians. For the purpose of our research, we have decided to focus on the senior generation living in Slovenia, t. i. everyone who is 65 of age and above. We try to examine how they deal with challenges of the modern world: the accumulation of different smart devices which have changed everyone’s life in a tremendous e.g. smart phones, ipads, computers, etc. We have also done a research and have pointed out a few major factors that contribute to the use of modern technology by elderly people, e.g. their age and their income. In our theoretical part, we also define the following expressions “senior generation” and “smart technology”. In their descriptions, we rely on the sources of knowledge found in different academic articles that touch on that topic. Finally, we describe the reasons as to why elderly people are not such frequent users of smart devices as younger generations are and conclude our research with pros and cons of modern technology (comparing it to the use during the Covid-19 pandemic). In the empirical part of this thesis, we present research results which have been obtained by using a qualitative research method. We have conducted twenty interviews with different elderly people that have been chosen randomly. Our aim was to explore the reasons why elderly people are not that keen on using modern technology. Moreover, we wanted to learn what digital challenges they face and how do they go about them. The summary of our research findings can be found in the conclusion section of our thesis. Of course, we have also included a few personal insights on the topic described. Finally, we conclude our thesis with a list of possible solutions to the topic.
