Title:Normative Values for Ultrasonographic Assessment of Thoracic Diaphragm Function
Abstract:Introduction and purpose: Due to the variety of benefits, ultrasonography (US) has recently been utilized to determine thoracic diaphragm (TD) function. Normative values are crucial for adequate evaluation; therefore, the aim of this thesis was to collect standard data for specific US parameters necessary for the evaluation of TD function, and to compare the collected data with published findings. Methods: 80 participants were subjected to the study (age 51.7 ± 17.0; 20-78 years old). US was used to measure the TD at functional residual lung capacity (FRLC) and at total lung capacity (TLC). It was also used to calculate the TD thickening fraction (d), the amplitude of TD movement during quiet (QB) and deep (DB) breathing, as well as TD velocity during the sniff manoeuvre. We compared normative values with previously published values. Results: The lower limit of the normal value for the FRLC variable was 1.1 mm, 1.7 mm for the TLC variable, the d was calculated at 0.3 mm, the amplitude during QB was measured at 8.0 mm and 28.0 mm during DB, and the velocity during the sniff manoeuvre was 40.0 mm/s. Usefulness: Normative values will be used in a clinical setting in the diagnosis of patients with neuromuscular and pulmonary disease, within internal medicine and in intensive care units. Limitations: Normative values will be more accurate with more participants in the study group.
