Abstract:Staranje je proces, ki doleti vsakega.

Title:Physiotherapeutic treatment of older adults in institutions and at home
Abstract:Aging is a process that affects everyone. Slovenia is facing a demographic crisis because of an aging population, as are other developed countries of the world. The share of the elderly population is increasing, which brings new challenges and changes in the fields of health, economics and sociology. There are specific health characteristics present on a larger scale in the group of elderly, than in other groups. Injuries of the musculoskeletal system are typical for this population, including fractures which can be fatal for them. Many chronic diseases are also present among the elderly, such as cardiovascular disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and cerebrovascular disease. Geriatric syndromes are also common, including falls and fragility. The listed conditions affect the functionality of the individual and cause difficulties in performing basic and instrumental activities of daily living, which negatively affects the individual's independence. As a result, the number of individuals in need of long-term care is increasing. In our country, this is mainly done in institutions such as nursing departments of hospitals and nursing homes. In this thesis, we examined the physiotherapeutic treatment of the elderly at home, which could be a part of long-term care services. Physiotherapy treatment at home can be effective as part of rehabilitation or as a prevention of falls and functional decline in the elderly. It is important to adapt treatments to each individual and their needs, to cooperate with those involved in treatment and care, and to set achievable goals. The Slovenian Long-Term Care Act also covers the provision of physiotherapy services at home to maintain independence.
