Abstract:Profesionalno ukvarjanje s športom zahteva veliko odrekanja, prav zato morajo športniki, ki želijo uspeti, trdo delati in se posvečati različnim vidikom športne rasti.

Abstract:Professional sports require a lot of sacrifice; therefore, athletes, who want to succeed, need to work hard and dedicate themselves to various aspects of sports growth. In order for an athlete to be willing to work hard, he must be constantly well motivated. Apart from the tasks such as preparation, execution and control of the training program, comprehensive counseling and assistance to athletes, the coach is also in charge of maintaining a high level of athletes' motivation. The aim of this thesis is to investigate how a coach can influence the motivation of an athlete and whether his influence on the increase of athlete’s motivation can lead to better sports results. The theoretical part describes types of motivation and how motivation influences athletes. In the following, what is the role of the coach in coaching the athlete, his tasks, why the relationship between the coach and the athlete is important and how the coach motivates the athlete. In the empirical part, six semi-structured interviews have been performed: three with footballers and three with football coaches. The results showed that motivation is a very important factor in sports, as it affects how well an athlete will train, which can affect the results he will achieve in the competition. The coach has an important motivational role as he works with the athlete on a daily basis and makes sure that he works to the maximum of his abilities.
