Abstract:The term diplomacy has two meanings as, on the one hand, it is the art and skill of conducting negotiations between representatives of different groups or countries, while, on the other hand, the informal or sociological term describes diplomacy as the use of tactics to achieve a strategic advantage. Most often, the term refers to international diplomacy as the field in which diplomats work, who are senior officials that represent the benefits of their country in international relations. The activity of Slovenes in diplomacy covers a long historical period, as we can talk about this long before the time of the establishment of an independent state. The key task of the Slovene state and its diplomacy was to achieve international recognition and independence; at the same time the process of establishing a new diplomacy was taking place. Last year, which was also challenging for diplomacy, a Diplomatic Academy was established at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for the first time in independent Slovenia. For Slovenia, the newly established academy is a great success, as it was finally realized in 2020 – the year of the coronavirus, after two failed attempts in 1996 and 2003. The fact that the academy was established at a time when handshakes and eye contact were not possible, tells us that the very launch of the academy and the proper training and education of diplomats was a much greater challenge.
