Abstract:The master's thesis examines why the older adult learners who are at least 45 years old and have a primary or lower vocational education are not sufficiently included in the extraordinary secondary education. From different aspects, we examined the reasons that prevent them from doing so, despite being more competitive in the labour market. The goal of adult secondary education in the Republic of Slovenia is to increase the share of the population with a completed four-year secondary school, which has proven to be a level of education that ensures greater employability. As part of the research, we reviewed the project Raising the level of education co-funded by the European Social Fund, and we analysed current statistics from the official school records of the competent ministry. We also conducted a survey of participants in adult education in the 2019/20 school year and we had interviews with representatives of various public education institutions. We found that very few older adults who have not completed high school are involved in the educational process, these older adult learners represent about 10% of all enrolled. A possible measure to increase the number of older adult learners is adequate funding for new projects that would encourage older people to become more involved in secondary education.
