Demenca prizadene vedno več starejših odraslih, večinoma so prisotni vedenjski in psihološki simptomi. Intervencije multisenzorne stimulacije z različnimi aktivnostmi in pripomočki spodbujajo olfaktorni, taktilni, vidni, slušni in gustatorni sistem.

Title:The basic sense stimulation in physiotherapy treatment in older adults with dementia
Abstract:Aging is a part of life that brings physiological, psychological, and social changes. Data shows that developed societies are aging rapidly, so it makes sense to think about the quality of aging. The decline, which affects the entire life, is typical in the sensory area but is also related to cognitive functioning. Dementia affects an increasing number of older adults with primarily behavioral and psychological symptoms. Pharmacological methods largely alleviate these symptoms, but non-pharmacological ones are mainly unexplored. Stimulating the basic senses is an intervention that does not require a lot of education, physical space, and financial input but can contribute to a higher quality of holistic treatment. Communication occurs non-verbally, so it is also suitable for people with cognitive decline. Multisensory stimulation interventions stimulate the olfactory, tactile, visual, auditory, and gustatory systems with various activities and aids. The breadth of this intervention allows us to use an individual-oriented approach. Touch significantly impacts our perceptions, thoughts, feelings, or another's behavior. It is essential in social interactions and affects mental health. Hands, and thus also touch, are a vital tool of a physiotherapist who, in addition to touch therapies, can also express care, empathy, support, and calm the person. The integrated bio-psycho-social model emphasizes the importance of including lifestyle and psychological factors in the treatment. Most of the research in the field of multisensory stimulation is methodologically weak, which would need to be changed to include sensory interventions in protocols. Positive effects are shown, but more high-quality research with good design, large samples, strong evidence, and the inclusion of control groups would be needed.
