Title:Behind the scenes of the music industry in the relation of management and record labels towards artists
Abstract:This present undergraduate thesis focuses on the relation of management and record labels towards musicians, with an emphasis on the relationship behind the scenes and the negative practices that emerge. Theoretical background describes the basic characteristics, functions and historical development of management and record labels in the music industry. The types, methods and characteristics of the contract, the content and meaning of the code of ethics, examples of bad practice of management and/or record labels towards musicians from all over the world and the consequences of bad practice in their careers and lives are described. The history, basic characteristics and current state of the music industry in Slovenia are also presented. The results were obtained through qualitative research, with the help of direct semi-structured interviews conducted with seven musicians who are part of the music industry in Slovenia and are from 18 to 30 years old with some experience with management and record labels. The aim of the research was to answer the research questions, which include describing bad practices encountered by musicians in Slovenia in relation to management and record labels, and describing how they dealt with bad practices. The research showed that the problem of mistreatment of management and record labels towards musicians in Slovenia is largely present. Most musicians have had some direct or indirect encounters with bad practices from management and/or record labels. The intensity and nature of bad practices varies from individual to individual. A minority of musicians have had exclusively positive experiences.
