Title:Narcissism in children
Abstract:In the bachelor’s thesis, we dealt with the issue of the expression of narcissism in Slovenian elementary school students, the expression of individual educational styles (authoritarian, authoritarian, and permissive) in parents and the connection of narcissism with educational styles. We decided on this topic because we wanted to check the state of narcissism in Slovenian elementary school students and to verify the thesis with research that permissive educational style is the cause of narcissism. We also wanted to check which parenting style parents use the most. We used a quantitative method for the research and we obtained the results with questionnaires on the 1KA website. In the pre-empirical part, we first made an overview of narcissism through history and today and how it is supposed to affect the child. We continued with an overview of parenting styles (authoritative, authoritarian, and permissive). In the empirical part, we presented research conducted on Slovenian elementary school students aged 12 to 14 and their parents. We found that, on average, narcissism is moderately pronounced among Slovenian children with parents using the authoritarian upbringing style the most. Our research has shown that authoritarian and authoritarian parenting styles are negligible and permissive parenting styles are weakly associated with children’s narcissistic behavior. The subcategories of authoritarian style, warmth and inclusion, and democratic cooperation are negatively related to the emergence of narcissistic behavior.
