Title:Perfectionism and a sense of security
Abstract:Security is an important value, a need and a right, not only for perfectionists who are prone to worries and in whom perfectionist behavior has evolved to provide them safety and protection, but for every individual of us. The main purpose of the master's thesis is to explore the factors that present risk factors to perfectionists and factors that provide them with a sense of security. We are also interested in how they ensure their safety and whether if perfectionist behavior is effective in ensuring safety. In the theoretical part, with the help of data collected in the professional literature, we first describe the concept of perfectionism, mechanisms for development in the individual, how it manifests itself in everyday life, what consequences extreme perfectionist tendencies can have, and describe perfectionist beliefs and mental errors. In the continuation of the theoretical work, we touch on another concept, which is security. We present different definitions of security, an individual's response to danger, and find connections between a sense of security and perfectionism. In the empirical part of the thesis, we present the results obtained using a semi-structured interview. The results represent the responses of 6 interviewees who showed signs of increased perfectionist tendencies in the MPS-H (Hewitt and Flett, 1991a) self-assessment test. The analysis of the presented results showed that one of the key risk factors is: failure and not being good enough. Their security is defined by a number of factors, from finances, health, good relationships, the absence of stress, and inner feelings of calmness, self-worth and satisfaction. They are willing to do anything for their sense of security, including ignoring their own needs and desires, which sounds paradoxical. Paradoxical is also the fact that perfectionist behavior provides them a sense of security, but also hinders, disturbs and harms them in their daily functioning and cause a lot of anger, frustration and dissatisfaction.
