Abstract:Teoretična izhodišča: Najpogostejša oblika periferne obrazne paralize je Bellova paraliza, ki je idiopatska (neznanega vzroka), akutna, enostranska paraliza sedmega možganskega oziroma obraznega živca, in povzroči oslabelost mišic na eni strani obraza. Strokovno znanstveno literaturo sem iskala v podatkovnih bazah PubMed, ScienceDirect, Google Scholar, Springer Link. Učinkovit fizioterapevtski pristop k rehabilitaciji periferne obrazne paralize so različne oblike elektroterapije: TENS, ES, elektro-akupunktura in terapija s faradičnim tokom. Učinkoviti so tudi fizioterapevtski pristopi z lasersko terapijo, magnetno terapijo in manualno terapijo. Razprava: S pregledom literature sem ugotovila, da sta najpomembnejša učinka fizioterapevtskega pristopa z elektroterapijo skrajšanje rehabilitacijskega časa in izboljšanje simptomov periferne obrazne paralize.

Abstract:Theoretical background: Most common form of peripheral facial paralysis is Bell's palsy, which is an idiopathic (unknown reason), acute, unilateral paralysis of the seventh cranial or facial nerve. It causes muscle weakness on one side of the face. In the theoretical part of the thesis, I presented the main characteristics of facial paralysis, the anatomy of the facial nerve and its functions, and physiotherapeutic approaches in the treatment of peripheral facial nerve paralysis. The purpose of the thesis was to review the scientific literature in the field of facial nerve damage and determine the effects of the physiotherapeutic approach with electrotherapy for peripheral facial paralysis. Method: The research approach of the thesis was a theoretical study with a qualitative methodology. I searched for professional scientific literature in the databases PubMed, ScienceDirect, Google Scholar, Springer Link. When searching for foreign literature, I used the following keywords: peripheral facial nerve paralysis, rehabilitation, facial nerve, Bell’s palsy physiotherapy. When searching for Slovenian literature, I used the following keywords: periferna obrazna paraliza, rehabilitacija, obrazni živec, fizioterapija, Bellova paraliza. Results: I have found that the most common factors for the development of peripheral facial paralysis are idiopathic in origin or are associated with various infections or traumas in the facial area. The most common is paralysis of unknown cause or Bell's palsy. Effective physiotherapeutic approaches in rehabilitation of peripheral facial paralysis are various forms of electrotherapy: TENS, ES, electro-acupuncture, faradic current therapy. Physiotherapy approaches with laser therapy, magnetic therapy and manual therapy are also effective. Discussion: By reviewing the literature, I found that the most important effects of the physiotherapeutic approach with electrotherapy are shortening the rehabilitation time and improving the symptoms of peripheral facial paralysis. Among the most effective approaches to achieve these effects are transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation therapy and electro-acupuncture.
