Advancing circular economy in Slovenia : a systematic review of industrial symbiosis networks and their opportunities
Erika Džajić Uršič, Alenka Pandiloska Jurak, Urška Fric, Jelena Topić, Simon Muhič, Janez Kolar, 2024, pregledni znanstveni članek

Opis: This article reviews the development and strengths of Industrial Symbiosis Networks (ISN) in Slovenia, which is crucial for transitioning to a Circular Economy (CE). Industrial Symbiosis (IS), as one of the tools for implementing a circular economy, promotes the collaborative use of resources, energy, and waste among industries, enhancing resource efficiency and reducing environmental impact. However, challenges such as inadequate regulatory support, underdeveloped markets for secondary raw materials, financial constraints, lack of awareness, and data-sharing issues hinder IS adoption. This article systematically reviews CE opportunities to enhance IS, including examples, digital platforms, eco-industrial parks, and government initiatives, using the PRISMA model (Preferred Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis). By addressing these challenges and leveraging opportunities, Slovenia can further integrate IS into its industrial framework, advancing its CE goals. This analysis provides a foundation for future research and policy development in Slovenian Industrial Symbiosis.

Blockchain and sustainability : examining the future of a circular economy due to new technologies
Gorazd Justinek, 2024, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: When talking about blockchain technology in academia, business, and society, it is frequently generalized that blockchain technology inherently consumes significant amounts of energy. Such perceptions raise substantial concerns regarding the potential for widespread adoption of blockchain systems, a fact that inhibits rapid uptake of what is widely considered to be a ground-breaking and disruptive innovation. Nonetheless, blockchain technology exhibits significant heterogeneity, meaning that blanket statements about its energy consumption should be reviewed with care. In order to move to circular economy and to achieve the Sustainable Development Agenda, energy efficiency must see a twofold improvement by the year 2030. Blockchain represents an emerging technological domain capable of addressing these challenges. There has been a lot of research on the topic of blockchain efficiency and circular economy, however this paper examines the intersection of sustainable development, the circular economy, and blockchain technology, analyzing the potential of blockchain to augment circular economic models while advancing sustainability objectives, even amidst concerns about energy efficiency.

Technologies and Innovations in Regional Development : the European Union and its strategies
2022, znanstvena monografija

Opis: The subsequent volume revolves around the Social-Fields-Approach (SOFIA) as an approach to conceptualisation and operationalisation for the purpose of empirical research. It contributes a new perspective and approach in research on innovation. We believe that SOFIA can have implications for both academic research and practical applications in reshaping the existing instruments and governance arrangements in innovation policy. Whilst aplying SOFIA, we urge researchers to leverage the plurality of different qualitative, quantitative and mixed-method approaches in innovation studies, including less conventional methods, such as QCA (Ragin, 2008). Diligent application of SOFIA can also subsequently lead to the development of high-level theoretical contributions.

Impact of circular economy as the EUʼs ambitious policy
Urška Fric, 2019, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: The article describes the role of legislative and legal framework which brought about a new approach to waste management through the concept of circular economy, and its drivers. We explicitly focus on the impact of ambitious EU environmental policy and its financial support from the European Commission (EC) which helped social actors recognize not only the ecological, but also the economic and social benefits of the circular economy. Over 50 actions under the “Circular Economy Action Plan” launched in 2015 have been delivered or are being implemented in this period in European Union (EU). Through overview of the EU’s ambitious policy, best practice of the circular economy in the world and status quo in circular economy at EU level we also show the circular economy is nowadays a crucial megatrend and there is still needed to increase up action at EU level, provide the competitive advantage it brings to EU economy and close the loop. Beside impact of ambitious EU environmental policy article focuses on the Cultural Political Economy (CPE) approach as a political economy approach with the purpose for explaining the role of legislative and legal framework as a mechanism for selection and retention of the paradigm of circular economy.
