Life cycle assessment of using firewood and wood pellets in Slovenia as two primary wood-based heating systems and their environmental impact
Jelena Topić, Urška Fric, Ante Čikić, Simon Muhič, 2024, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: Sustainable use of biomass energy sources can reduce dependency on fossil fuels. Wood biomass is the primary source for heating in Slovenia, with firewood and wood pellets having the highest share. Slovenia’s largest consumers of wood fuels are households primarily using wood from their forests or imported wood pellets. This research used a life cycle assessment to analyze and evaluate the environmental impacts of using firewood and wood pellets for household heating in Slovenia for the first time. The results showed that wood logs have a considerably greater effect on stratospheric ozone depletion, ozone formation, and fine particulate matter (PM) formation. The impact on global warming was lower due to short transportation distances and using log boilers with high combustion efficiency (0.016 and 0.041 kg CO2 eq for wood log and wood pellet combustion, respectively). An increase in transportation distance from 100 km to 1000 km resulted in an 84.9% increase in the values for the categories ozone formation and human health, a 120.4% increase for fossil resource scarcity, and a 102.4% increase in global warming, supporting the premise that short distribution routes are necessary for more sustainable use of the energy source.

Blockchain and sustainability : examining the future of a circular economy due to new technologies
Gorazd Justinek, 2024, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: When talking about blockchain technology in academia, business, and society, it is frequently generalized that blockchain technology inherently consumes significant amounts of energy. Such perceptions raise substantial concerns regarding the potential for widespread adoption of blockchain systems, a fact that inhibits rapid uptake of what is widely considered to be a ground-breaking and disruptive innovation. Nonetheless, blockchain technology exhibits significant heterogeneity, meaning that blanket statements about its energy consumption should be reviewed with care. In order to move to circular economy and to achieve the Sustainable Development Agenda, energy efficiency must see a twofold improvement by the year 2030. Blockchain represents an emerging technological domain capable of addressing these challenges. There has been a lot of research on the topic of blockchain efficiency and circular economy, however this paper examines the intersection of sustainable development, the circular economy, and blockchain technology, analyzing the potential of blockchain to augment circular economic models while advancing sustainability objectives, even amidst concerns about energy efficiency.

Unlocking sustainable commuting : exploring the nexus of macroeconomic factors, environmental impact, and daily travel patterns
Sergej Gričar, Nemanja Lojanica, Saša Obradović, Štefan Bojnec, 2023, izvirni znanstveni članek

Opis: This paper examines normality in time series econometrics for a sustainable energy transition. By analysing data from January 1997 to December 2021, this study integrates macroeconomic, environmental, and energy data to gain insights into the potential changes in daily commuting patterns among Slovenians. Various methods, including unit root tests such as the augmented Dickey–Fuller (ADF), Kwiatkowski–Phillips–Schmidt–Shin (KPSS), and Zivot–Andrews (Z-A), as well as other tests, are employed. Additionally, the vector autoregressive (VAR) model, Granger Causality and regression analysis determine the impact. This paper contributes to uncovering valuable information within data from macrovariables using macroeconometric techniques. It also provides insights that can support evidence-based decision-making for sustainable energy transition policies in Slovenia. The results of the normality tests indicate that most macro variables are integrated; there is a need for a careful analysis of integration levels and appropriate testing methods. These findings have implications for policymakers, researchers, and practitioners in economics, the environment, and energy supply. At the same time, this research highlights that gross domestic product, unemployment, inflation, and carbon dioxide positively impact car usage among Slovenians, while gasoline prices and commuters have a negative one. While the recently investigated development of sustainable commuting does not work, the study highlights an innovation: the connection of time series econometrics, which offers a better understanding of future commuting patterns on energy consumption and their causalities.

Impact of energy efficiency on the residential buildings appraisal : bachelor
Arb Govori, 2017, diplomsko delo

Opis: Demand for integration of energy efficient feature in the buildings valuation methodologies has increased significantly in the last decades, by the residential buildings owners. However, energy efficient feature is still largely unseen on building's real estate appraisals, due to not inclusion as a relevant feature on the buildings evaluation methodologies. It is essential that professional appraisals and the relevant state authorities are confronted with a new reality in changing the perception of the value of the residential buildings and offers concrete recommendations how to integrate the energy efficiency feature at the very early stage of appraisal methodologies. The aim of this paper is to determine the contribution of residential buildings energy efficient improvements into residential buildings valuation approaches. A simple methodology, through Sales Comparison Approach (SCA), is proposed to be considered in the valuation of residential buildings, taking into consideration the integration of energy efficient improvements. The simplified SCA calculation of a case study has revealed that sale price effects from increased energy efficiency are significant and positive.
