Stigmatizirani ljudje občutijo psihološke, socialne in telesne posledice.

Naslov:OBESITY STIGMA
Opis:In modern Western societies, the beauty ideal is slimness. Anything related to obesity carries a negative connotation. Overweight people are subjected to stigmatization, which manifests in the form of negative stereotypes, prejudices, and discrimination. Stigmatization often stems from the mistaken belief that obesity is a result of an inappropriate lifestyle rather than a complex medical condition. This belief underlies the common prejudice that overweight people are lazy. Stigmatized individuals experience psychological, social, and physical consequences. It is the stigma of obesity that often traps them in a vicious cycle of obesity. Stigmatization occurs both at the personal level and systemically, such as in healthcare facilities, schools, and workplaces, and it spreads through the media as well. Many studies show that obese individuals are most often stigmatized by those with normal body weight, attributing negative qualities to them, with gender differences present. Some research suggests that women typically hold more negative attitudes towards obesity than men, are more concerned about appearance, and have a greater fear of gaining weight, even if they have a normal body weight. In our thesis, we conducted research to determine whether adult women with normal body weight stigmatize obese individuals or attribute negative qualities to them based on their appearance. Through focus group methods, we investigated their attitudes and perceptions of obesity, specifically whether they believed that overweight people are lazy, less intelligent, and unattractive. We found that the majority of participants believed that overweight people are lazy and unattractive, but they did not agree with the statement that they are less intelligent. Through the analysis of their responses, we identified elements of negative stereotyping, prejudices, and discrimination. We concluded that reducing the stigma of obesity requires broader awareness, education, and societal changes, and we provided concrete recommendations for destigmatization and further research.
