Abstract:POVZETEK Čustva so za delovanje pomembna, saj motivirajo in usmerjajo naše vedenje. Postavili smo glavno raziskovalno vprašanje in sedem podvprašanj.

Title:Bipolar disorder in an intimate relationship: the perspective of the person with the diagnosis
Abstract:ABSTRACT Emotions are important for action because they motivate and guide our behavior. Mood swings in healthy people are influenced by a variety of factors and do not hinder individuals. However, prolonged, intense fluctuations that pose a significant barrier to the performance of daily activities can be problematic. Mood swings, reflected in alternating episodes of depression and mania, are among the main symptoms of bipolar mood disorder. There are several types of bipolar disorder, and different steps contribute to the establishment of stable moods. Bipolar disorder can affect various aspects of a person's life, including their relationships. The individual's functioning varies between depressive and manic phases, causing various changes in the partner relationship, often contributing to the deterioration of the latter. In this thesis, we aimed to examine the main characteristics of the partner relationship in both phases, as well as whether bipolar individuals' experiences of changes in the partner relationship are similar. We asked one main research question and seven sub-questions, and we used semi-structured interviews to elicit participants' reports. The sample consisted of seven individuals, four women, and three men. Coding the interviews yielded results that reflected a diversity of experiences, among which we were able to identify some consistencies. We found that more participants evaluated their relationship negatively during depression compared to mania. Participants mentioned the symptoms of the disorder and the attitude of the partner, such as caring, effort, and understanding, as the most important factors contributing to better or worse relationship quality. Participants reported that an understanding approach from the partner would contribute to a better relationship, and that psychoeducation is the basis for this. Despite some similarities between the experiences, we found that each individual with bipolar disorder experiences their relationship differently at different stages. In the future, we should ensure a more homogeneous sample, obtain reports from the healthy partner, and use questionnaires to obtain objective data
