Naslov:THE ROLE OF MOTIVATION OF RELATIVES IN CARING FOR A FAMILY MEMBER AT HOME
Opis:Theoretical background: With the phenomenon of the aging population, the elderly are recognized as a vulnerable population that often needs help due to health problems. They can receive formal assistance from organised care services and community health care. However, many times the elderly and relatives decide to spend the rest of their lives at home and the relatives become family caregivers. Informal care in Slovenia will continue to grow in the future, also due to more difficult access to health services and a shortage of health care staff. Family caregivers are key to keeping an elderly person in a home environment. Decisions to care for a family member are driven by a variety of motivational factors. The most common ones include love for one's neighbour, responsibility, belonging and interconnectedness. Motivation also plays a very important role, as it affects the quality of care provided by a family member. The higher the motivation, the better the care of the family member at home. And this is what we need to strive for as a society and enable older people and family carers to have a better quality of care and life. Method: A descriptive method of work with the analysis of primary and secondary data sources was used. The primary data for the analysis were obtained using the interviewing technique. The secondary source of data was a review of professional and scientific domestic and foreign literature and internet databases (Google Scholar, COBBIS, Pub Med, SPINGERLINK, the Digital Library of Slovenia and the Faculty Library). The pattern was purposeful. It included only relatives who take care of a family member at home in the area of the City of Ljubljana. We interviewed six people who care for a relative. Qualitative research was conducted in September 2024. For the interview, we obtained the contact addresses of the relatives with the help of the Home Care Institute Ljubljana. Results: All interviewees have a high level of motivation to care for a family member at home. The lack of motivation is not felt by the majority of interviewees, only two people stated that they are mentally tired. External support, especially financial, is important for all participants, as they have to finance additional professional assistance (home caregivers, home physiotherapy) and equipment and care aids. We find that most of the participants are self-educated, attend workshops and courses for informal caregivers, and use stress-relieving techniques such as yoga, meditation, walks, secluded respite and conversations. However, there is also a lack of information about the dates of workshops and courses, as two interviewees replied that they did not know the workshops at all. Discussion: The research found that motivation has a major impact on the quality of home care for a family member: the higher the level of motivation, the better the care. Great importance is attached to the motivating factors that helped them decide to become a family caregiver. Among the most common interviewees, they highlighted their love for their relatives, a sense of duty and belonging, and distrust in the healthcare system in Slovenia. In addition, family caregivers face various challenges, which they overcome quite successfully by finding additional sources of assistance and funding. In Slovenia, we have various forms of assistance with support mechanisms, which, according to the results of the survey, are not known to everyone. However, this does not affect the quality of care or motivation itself.
