Opis:Purpose: This study explores the transformative role of e-portfolios in South African higher education, particularly in promoting lifelong learning and fostering self-directed, autonomous students. It addresses the gap in understanding academics’ perceptions of e-portfolios' effectiveness in remote learning environments. Study design/methodology/approach: A qualitative interpretive systematic review was conducted, grounded in experiential learning theory, to analyse existing literature on e-portfolios and their impact on student development in remote contexts. Findings: E-portfolios enhance learning by encouraging goal-setting, progress tracking, and critical self-reflection, which support the development of both soft and technical skills. Academics view them as valuable tools for promoting student independence. However, challenges such as limited digital literacy and inadequate support systems hinder adoption, especially in under-resourced areas. Originality/value: This study contributes to the limited body of research on academic perspectives of e-portfolios in remote learning. It highlights their potential to enrich educational experiences and foster autonomy, while also identifying barriers that must be addressed to ensure equitable access and effectiveness.
