Title:The role of intercultural competences of physiotherapists with patients from different cultural and linguistic backgrounds
Abstract:The growing presence of migrants in Slovenia presents new challenges in the healthcare sector, particularly due to cultural and linguistic differences that influence the quality of communication between healthcare professionals and patients. Physiotherapists often encounter difficulties when working with patients from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds, especially in understanding their needs. These challenges can negatively affect the success of rehabilitation and overall patient satisfaction with therapy. This study focused on the impact of physiotherapists’ intercultural competencies on the quality of rehabilitation services. It explored the role of language and cultural differences, along with strategies that could enhance communication—such as the inclusion of interpreters, culturally tailored approaches, and additional professional training for physiotherapists. Findings indicate that while physiotherapists acknowledge the importance of intercultural competence, many feel insufficiently trained in this area. The most frequently reported challenges include language barriers, differing perceptions of rehabilitation among patients, and a lack of systemic support in addressing these issues. The results suggest that targeted training programs, more consistent use of interpreters, and culturally sensitive adaptations in physiotherapy practice could significantly improve both communication and therapeutic outcomes. As key providers of healthcare services, physiotherapists must be equipped to respond to the needs of culturally diverse populations, which requires ongoing development of intercultural competencies.
