Title:Crisis Communication in Nursing Homes during the Covid-19 Pandemic: Challenges, Practices and Systemic Responses
Abstract:This master's thesis examines crisis communication in nursing homes (NHs) during the COVID-19 pandemic, focusing on the challenges, practices, and systemic responses that in-fluenced the effectiveness of communication and the management of stakeholder relation-ships. During the health crisis, NHs represented a particularly vulnerable environment in which clear, timely, and empathetic communication was essential for maintaining trust among resi-dents, staff, family members, and the wider public. The theoretical framework is based on contemporary approaches to crisis communication, including models developed by Coombs, Benoit, Ulmer, and others, which emphasize the importance of preparedness, transparency, strategic response, and the management of perceptions and emotions. The empirical part of the thesis analyses the experiences of Slovenian NHs based on qualitative and quantitative data collected as part of the research and examines the impact of legislative measures, official guidelines, and institutional support provided by the state on the development of communica-tion practices. The research identifies key challenges, such as a lack of trained personnel, in-consistent communication strategies, and limited access to digital communication channels, and analyses which strategies proved effective in managing crisis situations. Based on the findings, the thesis proposes improvements to crisis communication in NHs that may contrib-ute to greater organisational resilience and preparedness for future crises. At the same time, the study contributes to a better understanding of communication as a key tool for managing crises in social care institutions.
