Abstract:Teoretična izhodišča: Tuberkuloza ostaja globalno pomembna nalezljiva bolezen, ki zahteva celovito in interdisciplinarno obravnavo. Podatki so bili analizirani z uporabo deskriptivne statistike (Microsoft Excel) in tematske analize. Rezultati: Medicinske sestre so pokazale visoko stopnjo znanja o simptomih (npr. nočno potenje, kašelj), zdravilih in diagnostičnih postopkih pri tuberkulozi. Njihove ključne naloge vključujejo dajanje zdravil, spremljanje stranskih učinkov, zagotavljanje ukrepov za nadzor okužb, izobraževanje pacientov in psihološko podporo. Kot najučinkovitejšo obliko zdravstvene vzgoje so izpostavile osebne pogovore (šola tuberkuloze). Največje izzive predstavljajo strah pred okužbo, komunikacijske ovire s pacienti (jezikovne in kulturne razlike) in občasno pomanjkanje časa.

Title:The Role of a Nurse in the Care of a Patient With Tuberculosis
Abstract:Theoretical background: Tuberculosis remains a globally significant infectious disease requiring comprehensive and interdisciplinary management. Nurses play a key role in diagnosis, nursing care, health education, psychosocial support, and infection prevention. The aim of this study was to analyse the knowledge, practices, and challenges of nurses in caring for tuberculosis patients in a tertiary healthcare institution. Methods: The study used a mixed-methods approach (quantitative and qualitative). The quantitative part involved a survey questionnaire completed by nurses (n=20) in a tuberculosis department. The qualitative part included semi-structured interviews with three registered nurses. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics (Microsoft Excel) and thematic analysis. Results: Nurses demonstrated a high level of knowledge regarding TB symptoms (e.g., night sweats, cough), medications, and diagnostic procedures. Their key tasks include medication administration, monitoring of side effects, infection control measures, patient education, and psychological support. Personal conversations (tuberculosis school) were identified as the most effective form of health education. The main challenges included fear of infection, communication barriers with patients (linguistic and cultural differences), and occasional shortages of time and resources. Interdisciplinary team collaboration was rated as highly effective and essential for quality care. Discussion: We found out that nurses are competent and dedicated in their role, yet they face cultural and communication challenges. Effective teamwork and continuous education are crucial for improving the care of patients with tuberculosis. Recommendations include the introduction of cultural mediators, additional psychosocial support for nurses, and the development of specialized training and digital materials for patients.
