In to s samo-vlaganji v (dodatno) izobraževanje, informiranje, mreženje, tj. vlaganji v individualni človeški in socialni kapital.

Abstract:In the last two decades the level of education in the EU countries increased significantly, especially the level of education of the young people. Meanwhile assurances that higher education brings better employment have decreased. For appropriate employment employers require additional informally acquired competences, skills and ability to build upon formal education. These requirements especially hurt young first job seekers and during the economic crisis also those with the highest levels of education. The main aim of this doctoral thesis is to find an answer to the question whether it is possible to decrease the uncertainty of employment outcome for young people with higher education. The question is whether this uncertainty could be lowered with self-investment in (additional) individual human and social capital. At the center of the exploration are the young graduates in the transition from education to the employment at the level of Slovenia as well as European countries. With European research data analysis on graduates' transition to employment we look at which kinds and forms of personal investment and which competences acquired during studies are the important factors in employment outcomes after graduation. The results show that only certain kinds and forms of human capital investment and competences positively contribute to faster and more successful employment after graduation. Important differences between the researched countries have emerged and these large differences prevent us from drawing general conclusions. With comparative study of Slovene students enrolled in study programs with insufficient labor market demand we researched possible increases of students’ human and social capital investment due to the economic crisis. The results of the study have shown that the students in general have not increased their investments in human and social capital. They have used their existing social capital at their disposal to advance certain competences that could improve their position on the labor market after graduation.
