Opis:The thesis studies how cured oncology patients assist in voluntary organizations helping oncology patients and/or their relatives. One of the conditions to join such an organization is that at least two years have passed since successful completion of treatment and rehabilitation. The aim of the research is to understand the causes, intentions and ways of volunteering in the Cancer Patient's Association of Slovenia. Experts, volunteers and the lay public believe that volunteering is necessary and beneficial to people who need help, as well as to those providing the help. In the research, we were interested in more detail about the effects of volunteer work, how the volunteers deal with difficult stories of patients, considering they themselves had a similar or even more difficult experience with the illness, and how their relatives experience volunteering. The research was based on a qualitative paradigm. We conducted five semi-structured interviews, as we wanted to obtain comprehensive answers to the research questions. We found that the reason for joining voluntary organizations helping oncology patients and/or their relatives consists of several segments: one's own cancer experience, remembering the needs in the process of their treatment and rehabilitation, desire for self-realization, high level of empathy for the patients and heartiness of the volunteer. All of the above helps the volunteers in their work even in moments when they are faced with difficult stories of patients and are hurting themselves. With the help of the conducted interviews, we learned that working with people for the people means a lot to the volunteers, as they build their self-esteem, fulfill themselves, and experience the meaningfulness of life. In addition to benefits they gain by volunteering, the people looking for help benefit from that as well. We also learned about the negative aspects of volunteering, which are manifested in satisfying one's own needs, meaningless verbiage, and above all in a form of strong negative feelings caused by stories of oncology patients. The thesis also briefly examines the attitude of volunteers' relatives toward volunteer work, which in the case of our research is mainly positive.
