Title:Distance schooling experience for parents of children with special needs : masters thesis
Abstract:The bachelor’s thesis delves into the experience of distance learning for parents of children with special needs. The first part of the theoretical part delves into the definition of children with special needs, the law adopted in this field and what the Republic of Slovenia offers to families with children with special needs. Then we described how the school system is adjusted for children with special needs, what is needed, how they are considered etc. We also focused more on distance learning in general and during the covid 19 epidemic. Finally, we also explored the field of parenting children with special needs. With the help of semi-structured interviews, we came up with the answers. We interviewed 10 parents who stayed at home with their child / children during the covid epidemic to help them with schoolwork. Through the interviews, we came to realize that parents experienced distance learning differently. Some felt better in the role of a parent because they felt inadequate in a role of a teacher. Parents state that they had problems such as the child's resistance especially to novelties, child's disobedience, deconcentration caused by external distractors, child's low psychophysical ability, etc. In addition, parents had problems combining work and homeschooling children. They mentioned problems time management, lack of time, inability (parents) to teach children with special needs, overburdening parents with work, which led to child deprivation at school. Parents report that children spent more time on the phone or television. Children received help with school obligations from teachers, they adapted their space for learning, limiting sounds and images, and with different activities while fulfilling obligations.
