Abstract:Medicinska sestra je strokovnjakinja na področju zdravstvene nege in je na primarnem nivoju zdravstva vključena v primarno oskrbo pacientov, s katerimi s spoštljivim in empatičnim komuniciranjem vzpostavlja zaupen profesionalen odnos.

Title:Nurse’s self-talk while communicating with a verbally aggressive patient : masters thesis
Abstract:A nurse is an expert in nursing care and is involved in the primary care of patients, with whom a nurse establishes a confidential professional relationship through respectful and empathic communication. As nurses are usually the first people with whom patients and relatives come into contact, they are the most frequently exposed to verbal aggression among medical professionals. The purpose of the master’s thesis is to determine a nurse’s self-talk while communicating with a verbally aggressive patient, and their behavioural tendencies and emotions. To answer the posed research questions, the first part describes the theoretical starting points, which are verified in the empirical part with qualitative research. A semi-structured interview included eight nurses, who work as outpatient nurses and have experienced verbal aggression. The results of the research show that self-talk occurs in all the interviewed nurses when communicating with a verbally aggressive patient, which the nurses are aware of, but do not verbalise. Most frequently, self-talk had a social assessment function and a negative disposition. However, the nurses were mainly able to interrupt it and respond to it professionally with respectful and empathic communication, while recognising their healthy negative emotions leading to functional behaviour intended to help the patient. Most frequently, they described frustration, anger and fear, causing them distress and stress even after the event. The nurses expressed the need for empowerment to manage communication with verbally aggressive patients more successfully, and pointed out experiential education, the strengthening of mutual relations and cooperation.
